Blood volume, hemodynamic, and metabolic changes in hemorrhagic shock in normal and splenectomized dogs. Am. J. Physiol. 225(4): 866-879. 1973.-Normal and splenectomized beagles were subjected to 3 hr of oligemic hypotension. Presence of the spleen was associated with larger bleeding volume, lesser transcapillary fluid influx, and higher values for hematocrit, viscosity, and total peripheral resistance (TPR). In late oligemia and following retransfusion, the nonsurviving normal dogs showed a loss of blood volume and elevations of viscosity and TPR. These changes were not found in the splenectomized dogs, which instead showed signs of cardiac insufficiency. Therefore, peripheral and cardiac failure may assume differential importance depending on the presence of the spleen. In early oligemia the nonsurvivals showed higher values of excess lactate, base deficit, and uric acid than the survivals; but the differences in base deficit and excess lactate diminished or reversed in late oligemia and after retransfusion. Several approaches in analyzing circulatory and metabolic changes in low flow states have been introduced, including the calculations of ultrafiltrate gain, vascular hindrance, and alactacid base deficit.

Cardiopulmonary effects of hemorrhagic shock in splenic autotransplanted pigs: a new surgical model.
The spleen is an important organ for hemodynamic compensation during hemorrhagic shock. The aim of the study was to compare the hemodynamic and metabolic responses of sham-operated pigs with intact spleen, splenectomized pigs, and splenic autotransplanted pigs during hemorrhagic shock. Hemorrhagic shock was induced by 30% total blood volume bleed in sham-operated, splenectomized and splenic aut...
متن کاملHemorrhagic shock hemodynamic and metabolic behavior: experimental study in dogs.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Different experimental models have been used to illustrate hemodynamic and metabolic changes during hemorrhagic shock. This study aimed at observing hemodynamic and metabolic behaviors during a sequential and progressive model of hemorrhagic shock in dogs to determine which indices are earlier changed. METHODS The study involved 13 dogs under total intravenous anesth...
متن کاملUltrasonographic Assessment of Caudal Vena Cava to Aorta Ratio as a Novel Endpoint in Hemorrhagic Shock Resuscitation in Dogs
Objective- The aim of this study was to assess ultrasonography-derived caudal vena cava to aorta ratio (CVC/Ao) as a novel endpoint in the resuscitation of experimental hemorrhagic shock in dogs. Design- Experimental study. Animals- Ten adult mongrel healthy dogs. Procedures- After induction of anesthesia (con...
متن کاملThe role of the vagus nerve in hypertonic resuscitation of hemorrhagic shocked dogs.
Previous studies have suggested a critical role for the vagi during the hypertonic resuscitation of hemorrhagic shocked dogs. Vagal blockade prevented the full hemodynamic and metabolic recovery and increased mortality. This interpretation, however, was challenged on the grounds that the blockade also abolished critical compensatory mechanisms and therefore the animals would die regardless of t...
متن کاملVertebral Heart Score: A Useful Parameter in Determination of Resuscitation Endpoint in Dogs with Hemorrhagic Shock
BACKGROUND: GReliable prediction of patient response to fluid resuscitation is a crucial issue in the management of hemorrhagic shock. OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to investigate vertebral heart score (VHS) variation in fluid resuscitation of hemorrhagic shock patients and the feasibility of this method in determining resuscitation endpoint. METHODS: VHS values were assessed using previ...
